Is Black Friday Really Worth the Hype?

Black Friday is just around the corner, but is it really the best time to snag a deal? Spoiler alert: Not always. As someone who has reviewed over 1,500 products over the past 8 years, I’ve seen some surprising pricing strategies that could make you rethink how you shop on this infamous day.

Here’s the truth about Black Friday deals—and when you should actually buy.

1. The Myth of “Lowest Prices of the Year”

While Black Friday is known for flashy doorbusters, those aren’t always the best deals. Retailers often:

  • Discount lower-end models or previous-generation items.

  • Advertise a few “loss leaders” to lure you in, hoping you’ll buy more at full price.

For example, I’ve seen top-rated air fryers discounted more during summer Prime Day than on Black Friday.

Speaking of air fryers, the Ninja Crispi is a hot-selling air fryer this year. You can watch my review here or check to see if it's in stock at the official website. But I digress...

2. Install an Amazon Price Tracker

One of the best ways to see if a Black Friday deal is truly a deal is by checking the price history. I use a browser extension called Keepa, which shows you detailed price history for Amazon products.

Here’s how it works:

  • Install Keepa on your browser.

  • Visit a product page on Amazon.

  • See if the Black Friday price is lower than past deals or just a marketing tactic.

Below is an example screenshot showing how Keepa highlights price trends. And no, this is not a sponsored shout-out! I just happen to use it myself.

Keepa’s price history can help you determine how much of a sale you’re getting.

3. Watch for Pre-Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals

Many retailers now start their sales days (or even weeks) before Black Friday. In some cases, the pre-sales are just as good—or better. Similarly, Cyber Monday often features deals on items Black Friday missed, especially on tech and gadgets.

Tip: Sign up for email alerts from retailers or use apps like Honey or Rakuten to track when prices drop.

4. Compare Prices Before You Buy

Retailers count on the frenzy to make you act fast—but don’t be fooled. Tools like:

  • CamelCamelCamel (Amazon price history)

  • PriceBlink (price comparison browser extension)
can help you confirm if you’re truly getting a deal or just falling for the hype.

A deal’s a deal, right?

5. When to Wait

Not everything is a must-buy on Black Friday. Here’s when it’s smarter to wait:

  • Winter clothing: January clearance sales often beat Black Friday prices.

  • TVs: The best deals are often before the Super Bowl in February!

  • Home goods and furniture: Look for Memorial Day or summer sales.

6. What’s Actually Worth It on Black Friday?

Based on years of tracking, here are the categories most likely to have great deals:

  • Electronics: Laptops, gaming consoles, and headphones often hit their lowest prices, especially if you aren't set on getting the absolute latest model.

  • Small appliances: Look for deals on items like air fryers or blenders. Competition can be fierce in this space, and prices usually reflect that.

  • Subscription services: Many streaming platforms and software companies offer significant discounts.

Final Verdict: Shop Smart, Not Fast

Black Friday can be a great time to save—but only if you do your homework. Compare prices, check reviews, and don’t let FOMO dictate your purchases.
